If God wanted us to walk on two legs, he would have given us better knee joints.
(Dr. E. von Hirschhausen)
Thanks to our joints we are able to move the way we move. Painful joints limits the range of motion drastically. If we suffer from painful joints, we are usually not able to move so freely anymore.
There are several causes for painful joints and different explanations for it:
Western medicine, cause of joint pain, acute pain : mainly because of traumas like bursitis, ligament sprain and joint dislocation
Chronic joint pain: constant pain longer than 3 month:
rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, cancer (bone, leukaemia)
The traditional approach to treat acute pain and swelling is the RICE protocol (Rest Ice, Compression, Elevation). As described in my blog "the ice dilemma" I like to use a slightly different approach.
- Rest the injured area
- Ice or cooling agents for 20 minutes every hour (never put ice directly on the skin)
- Compress with elastic bandage
- Elevate the injured part.
What I use instead is the MCE (Moderate movement, Compression, Elevation) protocol which is getting more and more used in practice.
- Moderate movement
Chronic pain: is often treated with non steroidal drugs (NSRA), physical therapy (including, massage, strength training), heat and cold applications.
Chronic joint pain in TCM "Traditional Chinese Medicine"
Acute pain of the joints is mostly caused by trauma, which blocks the free flow of blood and qi (Qi is a chinese term for life energy, which flows in meridians throughout the body). This is described as qi and blood stasis or stagnation which causes pain. It is treated with qi and blood moving techniques and methods like: acupuncture, chinese massage and chinese herbs to promote the flow of qi and blood in the vessels. In traditional chinese medicine it is common to use bleeding techniques to solve stagnation. Instead of Ice, herbal plasters will be used to reduce the swelling and pain.
Chronic pain in TCM is called bi-syndrom and is caused by invasion of pathogenic wind-cold, wind-heat and dampness into the body. These blocks the free flow of qi and blood and causes pain. If not treated properly it can change the joints over time leading to problems like osteoarthritis.
The main methods in TCM traditional chinese medicine are:
- Chinese Herbs
- Chinese Massage
- Movement exercises like Qigong and Taijiquan
