So what can you do when anger arises and your emotions are going on a roller coaster?
It depends on how fast and intensive your conscious reaction will be. Some people have a “short fuse” and explode instantly. In this situation it’s very difficult to get out of this cascade of eruption. Most likely you won’t be able to use any of the following techniques, till you calmed down to a degree of reason, than you can try using following methods.
If you are aware of how the anger is building up inside you, you can try these three methods to calm down and resolve the situation reasonable and calm.
- Reverse Spelling
Deep breathing or abdominal breathing is a fast way to calm down.
Inhale deeply through your nose, while your abdomen expands naturally “without force” and sinks while exhaling slowly. At the same time put both hands over each other and stroke down from the middle of the sternum to the navel while exhaling. Bring it up to the chest again while inhaling. Do this till you feel calmer and your heart beat normalises.
Try to spell your name backwards as soon you feel the anger rising. This will take away the focus of the subject of anger and you can calm down and proceed with some breathing or tapping techniques to clear any remaining negative emotions.
3. Tap the anger away
An excellent method to calm down, is by tapping certain acupuncture points to regulate the energy in your body and resolve negative feelings.
How does it work? Well so far there is no scientific research on this technique and how it works. The following explanation is only my hypothesis how it could work. There might be others, but what counts for me is with this theory is it’s reasonable and I can work with it. And it provides positive results. The technique itself is also called EFT emotional freedom technique and was developed by Gary Craig. It is used for almost any conditions where excessive emotions and feelings are involved.
How it works
By stimulating these acupuncture points we change the sensitivity of the receptors in the brain. So the trigger/stimuli can’t connect and doesn’t cause the arousal of the usual feelings. It’s like the key and keyhole analogy. The key represents the trigger/stimuli and the keyhole the receptors. By changing the structure of the keyhole the key won’t match anymore and doesn’t cause the usual reaction. By tapping these acupuncture points we create a energetic “disturbance” in the body, because of these, the receptors chemical reaction changes and is not so accessible to cause a reaction as before.
- Always start the taping sequence from the top down.
- Use your index and middle finger to tap.
- While tapping this 7 points create an affirmation sentence which will help you clear the anger (like: Even if I am so upset with having an accident, I deeply and profoundly accept myself) “Try to address the cause of the problem as exactly as you can and at the same time create a self affirmation sentence”.
- on the medial side of the eyebrow corner
- on the outer corner of the eye
- below the eye on the middle line
- below the nose
- below the mouth
- in the corner of the collar bone (clavicle) and sternum
- under the armpit
If the anger is rising to fast and you can’t control it anymore. Let it out and use the technique afterwards for clearing any left negative emotions.
